JOUR 401 - First Amendment and Society (3 units) CO8 Study of theory, origins, practices, laws, conflicts, resolutions involving U.S. Constitution guarantees of free speech, press, religion, assembly, petition.
Prerequisite(s): CH 201 ; ENG 102 ; Junior or Senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 Core Status: CO8 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to define and apply basic legal terminology. 2. Students will be able to distinguish between different stages of the judicial process. 3. Students will be able to identify elements of case citations and locate case law. 4. Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of major cases that have shaped our understanding of communication law by analyzing a contemporary or hypothetical legal case and applying relevant legal precedent. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with the origins, history, and essential elements of the Constitutions of the United States and Nevada, as well as the evolution of American institutions and ideals.
