CAS 712 - Neuroscience of Addiction

Explores the etiology of alcohol and drug dependency with an emphasis on brain disease and neurobiological influences upon addiction. (Formerly HCS 712; implemented Summer/Fall 2009)

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the basic neuroanatomy and pharmacodynamics elicited by different classes of drugs of abuse.
2. Students will be able to articulate the current scientific research on the neurobiology of addiction as it relates to specific psychoactive substances of abuse.
3. Students will be able to analyze the basic models of addiction and their relationship to the present understanding of addiction as a brain disease.
4. Students will be able to detail and apply the neuroscience of addiction to inform their understanding of prevention, treatment and recovery processes.
5. Students will be able to discuss the common medications used in the treatment of behavioral health issues and the clinical application of such knowledge in their practice as clinicians.
