CHS 708 - Epidemiology II

Reinforcement of concepts and methods in the context of developing skills in general epidemiological research. (Formerly PUBH 708; implementation Fall 2009)

Prerequisite(s): CHS 712; CHS 780.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to debate the different measurement scales and the implications for selection of statistical methods to be used based on these distinctions.
2. Students will be able to recommend descriptive and inferential methodologies according to the type of study design for answering a particular research question.
3. Students will be able to judge results of statistical analyses found in public health studies.
4. Students will be able to evaluate data analysis using a statistical software package (SAS).
5. Students will be able to judge basic epidemiology measures.
6. Students will be able to evaluate causal inference and hypothesis testing.
7. Students will be able to assess the purposes, strengths, and weaknesses of various study designs.
8. Students will be able to verify random error and systematic error (bias).
9. Students will able to analyze whether confounding and/or effect modification is present.
10. Students will be able to evaluate the strengths and limitations of epidemiologic reports.
