CHEM 755 - Statistical Thermodynamics (3 units) Molecular approach to the study of fundamental thermodynamic energy relationships.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered Every Spring - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes (if available): Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate fundamental understanding of connection between microscopic properties of atoms and molecules, and macroscopic properties of gases, liquids and solids. 2. Students will be able to predict behavior of real gases, liquid and solids using simple models of statistical mechanics. 3. Students will be able to calculate partition functions for classical and quantum model systems. 4. Students will be able to calculate thermodynamic properties, equilibrium constants, and reaction rate constants from partition functions. 5. Students will be able to apply concepts of statistical mechanics to explain different types of phase transitions.
