Description


In the Bachelor of Arts with a major in Women’s Studies program, you will:

  • Learn the influence of gender in a historical and contemporary context,
  • Discuss critical theory in gender studies and multiculturalism,
  • Consider the intersections of race, class, sexuality, gender, and ethnicity,
  • Compare and analyze male and female gender roles in family and society,
  • Study gender as it influences scholarship and human relations,
  • Explore the contributions of women to history, literature, and academia,
  • Examine the power dynamics between genders from global issues to personal relationships,
  • Encourage critical thinking and new perspectives on the role of women in society.

II. Additional College Requirements (6-20 units)


Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language coursework.

A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)


Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:

  1. complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
  2. demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
  3. show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
  4. participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.

B. College Breadth Requirement (6 units)


Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, two courses that are outside the departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill Core Curriculum requirements.

III. Major Requirements (33 units)


Students may choose either a thesis or non-thesis option for the major. A grade of “B-” or higher in Women’s Studies 101 is a prerequisite for continuing in the major.

A. Women’s Studies Core Courses (12 units)


 These courses are required for either the thesis or the non-thesis option.

B. Thesis or Non-Thesis Options (21 units)


  • If the Thesis option is chosen, complete the following:
