Undecided/Exploratory Student Policy

Undecided/Exploratory Student Policy

Declaring a major early in the academic career increases the likelihood of graduating in a timely manner.
Undergraduate students who enter the university without having declared a major are strongly encouraged to identify and begin exploring major areas of study with academic advisors and faculty in their first semester.  Undeclared students are required to meet with an advisor in the Advising Center for Undecided Students each semester.  All degree-seeking undergraduate students are required to declare a major or be admitted into a program before or upon completion of 60 credits.  Upon earning 45 credits (exclusive of Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate credits), undeclared students will be contacted and informed that they must declare a major before completing 60 credits.  Undeclared students will be encouraged to participate in various career exploration programs and activities offered by the Advising Center for Undecided Students, colleges, or departments.  Students who have not declared their major by the time they have earned 60 credits will not be permitted to register for classes in the next term until they have declared a major.
For students transferring into the university with more than 60 credits, a registration hold will be added at the end of late registration for their first term.  The declaration of major must occur before registration opens for the next term. Transfer students who have not declared their major by the time registration for the next term opens will not be permitted to register for classes in the next term until they have declared a major.
