Academic Credit/Online and Independent Learning
Undergraduate and graduate credit courses are offered in a number of communities across Nevada in addition to courses carried in the university’s Fall, Spring, Wintermester and Summer Session class schedules.
Classes are offered from a variety of academic departments and include four complete online master’s degrees in Education.
Extended Studies at the University administers University Credit Across Nevada (UCAN), an ongoing program to reach students throughout the state who might not otherwise be able to readily access university-level courses. UCAN offers academic credit courses for the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree and other degree programs, teacher recertification and professional development, and career advancement. Fall and Spring courses as well as Summer Institutes are offered in a variety of formats including face-to-face instruction, hybrid, and web-based, plus summer field study. The university’s Online and Independent Learning program is the only program of its kind in Nevada offering higher education courses. Online and Independent Learning gives students the opportunity and flexibility to learn on their own without the limitations of time or location associated with classroom instruction.
More than 200 college-level sections are available through Online and Independent Learning. Students may enroll in open-enrollment courses at any time, and take up to a year to complete the requirements. Many semester-based courses are also available online.
Online and Independent Learning courses may be taken for university or degree requirements, teacher recertification, vocational advancement or personal enrichment. Most courses are approved by the Veterans Administration, as well as the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) for students pursuing educational goals under these military programs.

Professional Development/Management Education
Working closely with advisory committees, University faculty and other experts in their fields, Extended Studies provides professional development programs within a variety of disciplines. Courses, workshops, conferences and certificate programs address the latest trends, topics and issues in order to help professionals stay current in their fields, maintain and improve their skills, and enhance their career development. Most of these programs are noncredit. Instructors are drawn from University faculty and from practicing professionals in the community.
Summer Session
Administered by Extended Studies, Summer Session is the university’s third instructional semester. Undergraduate and graduate students may enter the university or use Summer Session to continue progress toward degrees. Special classes of interest to members of the community are also scheduled during the summer. Undergraduate university students and high school students may take classes during the summer without being officially admitted to a degree-seeking program. Wintermester
The University of Nevada, Reno offers classes during Wintermester in a condensed, three-week format, with a select number of classes that fulfill degree requirements in a variety of colleges. For information, visit http://www.wintermester.unr.edu .
Evening Studies and Degree Programs
Evening Studies and Degree Programs help students earn credit beyond the university’s traditional hours. With expanded studies and core curriculum choices beginning after 4 p.m., non-traditional students can earn a four-year degree, develop job skills and explore academic areas “after hours.” In addition to the MBA and MPA programs, evening undergraduate degree programs are available in English, business, criminal justice, geography, art, psychology, political science and general studies.

Summer Freshman Start
Freshman Start is a program for incoming freshman who need to take MATH 96 , and/or ENG 98 , or need help with placement in required English and Math courses. Students who do not have the required ACT/SAT scores to register for ENG 101 , MATH 120 , or MATH 126R can benefit from Freshman Start and in five weeks meet the requirements for fall enrollment. Special Interest/Community Education Programs
A variety of educational music and arts programs are offered throughout the year and have included the Performing Arts Series; Lake Tahoe Music Camp; Summer Arts on Campus; the Reno Jazz Festival; and the university’s Symphony and Women’s Choruses.
Extending the university’s resources to all ages, Extended Studies provides enhancement and enrichment courses and camps for youths ages 7-18, including KIDS University, and sports camps in partnership with Wolf Pack Athletics.

Redfield Campus
The Redfield Campus is a unique collaborative effort in education and training, combining the resources of the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College. The Redfield Campus emphasizes innovative education and degree programs by providing University and Community College credit courses and programs across many disciplines, and offering professional development courses and certificate programs for those already in the workforce. Home of the Renewable Energy Center, the Redfield campus is also a research education and outreach resource for geothermal and other renewable technologies in Nevada. The Redfield Campus MacLean Observatory houses two telescopes that work together to serve academic, research and community education needs. The planetarium is the community’s science education center, featuring SkyDome 8/70 large-format feature films and up-to-the- minute planetarium star shows.

Carrying on the 16-year tradition of ElderCollege, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Nevada, Reno is a member-directed organization sponsored by Extended Studies that offers short-term educational experiences for adults 50 and older in norther Nevada. OLLI seeks to foster intellectual stimulation, new interests and personal development through academic pursuits and to provide a community in which to gather, get acquainted and socialize. Nevada Humanities

Nevada Humanities creates public programs and supports public projects statewide that define the Nevada experience, feature local culture and heritage, encourage intellectual curiosity, and facilitate the exploration of issues that matter to Nevadans and ther communities. Founded in 1972, and now with offices in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada Humanities is one of 56 nonprofit state and territorial humanities councils affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Nevada Humanities programs include Nevada Humanities Chautauqua, the awardwinning Young Chautauqua program, the Online Nevada Encyclopedia, the Literature & Medicine reading discussion program, the Vegas Valley Book Festival, Humanities on the Road, and statewide outreach programs and collaborations. Nevada Humanities performs the dual roles of conducting humanities programs of its own and regranting state and federal funds designated for this purpose to Nevada nonprofit organizations to support the creation of dynamic projects. Nevada Humanities programs are implemented statewide, in both rural and urban parts of the state, and its constituents are the residents of Nevada.
