  2. Be admitted to the University in a degree or eligible certificate program. You may submit your FAFSA prior to acceptance to the university, however, aid will not be offered until you have been admitted.
  3. Have a high school diploma.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  5. Have a valid Social Security Number.
  6. Be registered with Selective Service, if required.
  7. Be meeting satisfactory academic progress standards.*
  8. Use financial aid only for educational purposes.
  9. Not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on any federal educational loan.

The financial aid application (FAFSA) is free and information about submitting this application is readily available on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov or through our office at www.unr.edu/financial-aid.

Enrollment in degree applicable units is a requirement to receive federal financial aid and the Kenny C. Guinn Millenium Scholarship. Degree applicable units are those that meet university, college, major, or minor requirements and other advisor-approved units in support of degree objectives.

* “Satisfactory Academic Progress” is the term used to denote your successful completion of coursework toward a degree or certificate. The University is required to monitor the academic progress of all recipients of federal, state, and institutional aid. These academic standards apply for all periods of enrollment at all colleges attended. If you do not meet the minimum academic standards for grade point average and earned credits you may be ineligible for all types of federal, state, and institutional aid – including scholarships - administered by our office.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

To apply for federal financial aid, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov between October 1st and February 1st for maximum consideration. Applying after that date, allows you to be considered for Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans and any remaining Institutional funds as of the date your application is submitted to our office. Institutional need-based grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis to eligible students.

Our institutional need-based funds are generally distributed based on financial need determined by the FAFSA. The FAFSA can only be filed by citizens or eligible non-citizens so we are pleased to offer an annual institutional calculation to determine financial need for our Non- FAFSA eligible students: The Institutional Methodology for Non-FAFSA Eligible Students.

APPLICATION PROCESS

In order to complete the application, you must be admitted to a degree seeking program at the University of Nevada, Reno and have a valid NSHE ID. The Institutional Methodology for Non FAFSA Eligible students is available to continuing students between January 31st and March 1st annually and for new admits until April 1.
