Prospective students applying for admission and students having a break of enrollment of one or more semesters applying to return to the university are charged an application fee of $60, which is not refundable nor applicable to any other fee. The fee is payable at the Cashier’s Office in the Fitzgerald Student Services Building, through MyNEVADA, or via the university admission website. Full-time faculty and staff of the university may apply to Admissions and Records to have this fee waived.
New Student Fee
- New undergraduate student fee–$150 for students;
- This fee pays for items, programs, and services, related to being a New Undergraduate Student at the University, including orientation, Wolf Pack Welcome, Student Success Series and your first student ID.
- New graduate student fee–$35 for students.
Counseling Services Fee
The University of Nevada, Reno, through its Counseling Services Office provides confidential, professional counseling related to mental health, and emotional well being for this university’s undergraduate and graduate students. The $50 fee is designed to support current and future demands for mental health counseling as provided by the Counseling Services office. In no way does this preclude Counseling Services from seeing students in crisis since professional standards of practice mandate that such situations be addressed immediately.
The mandatory counseling fee is posted for every enrolled undergraduate and graduate student who is registered for six or more credits. No fees will be prorated during the semester. Students who are exempt from paying the fee can still opt to pay the fee and receive psychological counseling services. These students include:
- Any student enrolled for less than 6 credits each semester;
- Students enrolled in mini sessions or summer sessions;
- Students enrolled in the School of Medicine;
- “Students in crisis,” seen prior to paying the fee. Any student in crisis who has not paid the fee will be received on the initial visit to meet with a psychological counseling professional. Subsequent visits will require the semester fee to be paid in advance. Students who elect not to pay the fee will be referred to a counseling resource in the community.
Students Exempted From Paying the MCF and, therefore, are not eligible for services. Criteria for Exemption include:
- Students who do not have access to Counseling Services;
- Students out of the service area on exchange at another campus:
- Students not in the geographic area who are enrolled in distance education courses, enrolled for dissertation credits, etc.;
- Graduate and undergraduate students working at Counseling Services in either a clinical or clerical capacity. Ethical guidelines prohibit provision of services to co-workers.
Student Health Center Fee
Students registering for six or more credits are required to pay a $93 health center fee. This fee will be automatically charged to the student’s account. Student Health Center services are available at the same rate to spouses of enrolled students.
Students registering for fewer than six credits have the option of purchasing health center services for $93. A $5 copayment is required for each visit to the health center.
All students must pay the health center fee in order to be eligible to purchase the supplemental accident and health insurance coverage.
Students who graduate with a bachelor’s, master’s, professional or doctoral degree, or those students who receive an education specialist certificate, are required to pay a $75 graduation fee. Students are required to pay the graduation fee each time they file a graduation application.
Academic Success Fee
Funding from the academic success fee supports centralized delivery of academic success services tailored to undergraduate and graduate student needs. For undergraduates, these include math and writing assistance, supplemental instruction for classes with high failure/withdrawal rates, and walk-in and group tutoring. For graduate students, it provides assistance with writing including theses and dissertations.

Performing Arts Fee
The performing arts fee brings high caliber arts and cultural programming to the University, enriching the experience of all students.

Special Instruction Fees
The fees assessed for specialized instruction depend entirely upon current costs. Special instruction fees are required for:
- Courses requiring equipment, facilities or materials not available on the university campus; for example, bowling, golf or certain field courses;
- Private instruction in music and in similar arts; 3 Noncredit courses, conferences, workshops, postgraduate professional seminars and similar educational offerings;
- Personal expenses of students incurred in connection with field trips or laboratories.
Joe Crowley Student Union Fee

- Undergraduate students taking 4 or more credits: $94/semester
- Undergraduate students taking 3 or fewer credits: $25/semester
- Graduate students taking 7 or more credits: $97/semester
- Graduate students taking 6 or fewer credits: $49/semester
The $5/credit ASUN fee applies to all undergraduate students and supports the Associated Students of the University of Nevada operations and programs. This fee is included in the registration fees listed on the previous page.
The $7.00 per credit technology fee applies to all students and is used to provide technology infrastructure to support instruction, advisement, registration, financial aid and fee processing.
Digital Course Materials Fee
The charges assessed for digital course materials depend upon the materials required for each class and costs negotiated with individual publishers. These costs are associated with, and dependent upon, specific class registration. These charges are placed on student accounts at the time of tuition and fee calculation. The refund policy, schedule, and student appeal process follow the general Refund of Fees policy.
Student may opt out of course material access, and associated charges, throughout the registration time period. Once the late registration time period is completed, the charge is nonrefundable. A late opt out may be appealed to the Nevada WolfShop. If a student opts out of this program, refunds of the charge will be processed after late registration.
International Student Fee
All international students in F-1 or J-1 status are charged the international student fee of $145 each term. This fee primarily supports the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), which provides the infrastructure to bring international students to the University of Nevada, Reno. The OISS is responsible for maintaining international student records and complying with federal regulations pertaining to international students and scholars; registering and updating student records in SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System); securing and maintaining institutional authorization to issue visa documents; providing support for international student recruitment, admission, and orientation; counseling and advising international students on visa, work, academic, and cultural issues; training on intercultural issues; promoting intercultural understanding; and contributing to the global engagement of the university community.
This fee is a per credit fee charged to College of Business graduate level courses, College of Engineering upper division (300-499 level) and graduate level courses; and beginning Spring 2014, Nursing upper-division (300-499 level) and graduate level (500-799) level courses. Excess Credit Fee
The following Nevada System of Higher Education Policy is effective:
A 50 percent Excess Credit Fee on the per-credit registration fee shall be charged to a student who has accrued attempted credits equal to 150 percent of the credits required for the student’s program of study. Attempted credits include all graded courses on a student’s transcripts, including but not limited to the grades of F and W (withdrawal) and repeated courses. The fee will be charged, for example, after 90 credits have been accumulated towards a 60-credit associate’s degree or 180 credits towards a 120-credit bachelor’s degree. Exceptions may apply on a case-by-case basis. The fee will be charged in all terms after passing the threshold number of credits until a degree is awarded to the student. Appeal procedures and other exceptions to the fee are outlined in the catalog.
Students who have attempted 150 credits and have not earned a bachelor’s degree will receive information on the Excess Credit Fee Policy in MyNEVADA. Students who have attempted more than 150% of the total credits required for the bachelor’s program in which they are currently enrolled and who have not earned a bachelor’s degree will be added to an Excess Credit Student Group after late registration each term. New members of this student group will receive a notification in MyNEVADA that they will be subject to the excess credit fee for the subsequent term unless they successfully appeal.
Appeals will be accepted only from students who are subject to the fee currently and those who will be subject to the fee for the subsequent term. Visit the Academic Central forms page for a link to the NSHE Excess Credit Fee Appeal Form. Students must use the Planner tools in MyNEVADA to build a plan through graduation. A copy of the planner, printed from MyNEVADA, and signed by the appropriate advisor must accompany each Excess Credit Appeal Form submitted to the Office of Admissions and Records. Incomplete appeals will not be accepted. Appeals that cannot be approved after initial processing in the Office of Admissions and Records will be forwarded to the Excess Credit Fee Appeals Committee.
Students must identify credits attempted in the following allowable exclusion categories as part of the appeals process:
- Credits earned through examinations for determining credit for prior learning (such as AP, CLEP, Excelsior College Exam, IB, DSST, ACE, etc.);
- Credits attempted while enrolled as a high school student if those credits do not meet the degree requirements for the student’s program of study;
- Credits attempted at an institution outside NSHE if those credits do not meet the degree requirements for the student’s program of study;
- Credits attempted in remedial courses;
- Credits attempted for community service courses;
- Credits from previously earned degrees or certificates if they are the same level as the student’s current degree objective.
All appellants will be required to submit a new appeal for the Spring of 2016 when the new NSHE Excess Credit Fee Appeal form will be available. Students who follow the plan submitted with their Spring 2016 appeal and stay on track to graduate in the term identified in that plan will not be required to submit a new appeal. Each student’s progress on their gradation plan will be checked when grades are final at the end of each regular term. Waivers of the Excess Credit Fee for Summer (for students with summer enrollment) and Fall will be processed when progress is checked at the end of each Spring semester.
Fitness Center Construction Fee
Effective Fall 2014, all undergraduate students will be charged an additional $15 per semester.
