|
The University of Nevada, Reno is the lead institution for the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Program in Nevada and manages this program for the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). Congress established the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program (Space Grant) with Title II of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 1988. The program’s national objectives are to establish and maintain a national network of universities with interests and capabilities in aeronautics, space and related fields; to encourage cooperative programs among universities, aerospace industry and Federal, state and local governments; to encourage interdisciplinary training, research and public service programs related to aerospace; to recruit and train U.S. citizens, especially women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities for careers in aerospace science and technology; and to promote a strong science, mathematics and technology education base from elementary through secondary levels. Space Grant contributes to the nation’s science enterprise by funding research, education and public service projects through a national network of 52 university-based Space Grant consortia. The consortia have over 700 affiliates that include 493 academic institutions and the national aerospace industry. The Statewide Space Grant Office is located in the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, in Room 302 of the Laxalt Mineral Engineering Building. Information and applications for the undergraduate scholarship and graduate fellowship program can be found on the following website: http://www.nvspacegrant.org/ .
