Scholarships are merit awards based on academic performance or talent (such as in music, art or athletics). Completing the FAFSA or the IM is encouraged as many scholarships include financial need as a criterion. Continuing students MUST complete the Graduate & Undergraduate scholarship (GUS) application in MyNEVADA supplemental forms annually between October 1 and February 1 for maximum consideration. A Late Graduate & Undergraduate Scholarship application is available in MyNEVADA supplemental forms until May 31.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
The University’s general scholarships are open to new and continuing students who apply for scholarships and do not have a non-resident tuition discount. Priority for funds is given to full time students at the University of Nevada, Reno who earn over a 3.4 cumulative GPA at the University of Nevada, Reno. New general scholarship offers are limited to students who have attempted less than 130 credits.
Scholarships to juniors and seniors are awarded primarily by the college or department. Students receiving non-resident tuition discounts who complete GUS ARE eligible for scholarships from colleges and departments. Some colleges and departments require a supplemental scholarship application. College and department scholarship offers to first baccalaureate students are limited to students who have attempted under 180 credits.
First year students who receive a non-resident tuition discount are given full consideration for the Presidential and National Merit Scholarships. Students with a non-resident tuition discount are not eligible for Pack Pride or Nevada Scholars level Scholarships.
First year students who submit a complete application for admission by February 1 (including application, official high school transcripts and official test scores) are guaranteed maximum consideration for admissions-based scholarships. Academic credentials for new first year scholarship consideration are the cumulative unweighted high school GPA at admission and the best single sitting college entrance examination scores (ACT or SAT) submitted to the University of Nevada, Reno prior to February 1 (December is the last eligible exam date).
GRADUATE STUDENTS
Continuing graduate students must complete the Graduate & Undergraduate scholarship application in MyNEVADA supplemental forms by the February 1 priority deadline or May 31 final deadline to be eligible for scholarships. Completing the FAFSA or the IM is encouraged as many scholarships include demonstrated financial need as a criterion. Some colleges and departments require a supplemental scholarship application. Graduate student scholarship offers are limited to students who have attempted fewer than 150% of their program minimum degree requirements. In general this limits Ph.D. students to under 36 dissertation credits and Masters students to 12 thesis credits.
