Dismissal

Students who are on Second Semester Probation and fail to raise their University of Nevada GPA above the Academic Probation threshold (2.0) will be dismissed from the University.

Students will receive a letter and an email notifying them to access updated information on their academic status (Probation or Dismissal) at MyNEVADA. If dismissed, a student is not allowed UNR enrollment for a period of one calendar year.

Students whose cumulative University of Nevada grade point average was less than 2.0 for the last three regular semesters of enrollment may petition to return by following the release from university dismissal process below. Students whose cumulative University of Nevada grade point average was less then 2.0 for the last one or two regular semesters of enrollment may complete the regular returning student application for admission, but a registration/advising hold will be placed on their record when their admission is processed.

Release from University Dismissal: An undergraduate student who has been dismissed may not enroll for one year. Upon dismissal, students should contact their academic advisor promptly to develop a plan to obtain release from dismissal. Dismissed students may return to the University only on the basis of evidence that underlying conditions have materially improved and that they are now capable of academic success.

Submit requests on the Release from University Dismissal form and attach appropriate documentation (a letter to the committee from the applicant, letters of support from faculty and/or advisors, medical records, transcripts from transfer institutions, etc.) The requirements for re-acceptance to specific programs and majors are always subject to both general University and specific program standards.

The deadlines for submission of requests for release from dismissal depend upon the semester the student intends to re-enter the University.

  • For students applying to re-enter in a fall semester, the Request for Release from Dismissal form must be received in the Office of Admissions and Records by July 15th.
  • For students applying to re-enter in a spring semester, the Request for Release from Dismissal form must be received in the Office of Admissions and Records by November 1st.

The Dismissal Review Committee will respond to these submissions by August 1st and December 1st respectively.  Late registration fees will be assessed according to the regular registration calendar.

Students returning from dismissal must raise their University of Nevada GPA to at least a 2.0 within two regular semesters. These students must progress toward good-standing each semester, or they will again be dismissed. The Dismissal Review Committee may approve requests for release that include a plan for improvement longer than two semesters if it is mathematically impossible for the applicant to reach good standing in two semesters. The Committee may add appropriate contingencies not explicitly referenced here to its decision to readmit any dismissed student.

The returning student admission application fee will be assessed for students who are readmitted to the University via the Request for Release process.

Appeal of Dismissal: Ten business days after students are notified that they have been dismissed, their registration for the next regular semester will be cancelled. Students will receive a letter and an email notifying them to access updated information on their academic status at MyNEVADA. Students may appeal to be reinstated by submitting the Appeal Undergraduate Dismissal form. Students must submit their appeal to the Office of Admissions and Records within 10 business days of notification of dismissal to hold their registration pending the outcome of their appeal. Appeals may be submitted no later than 10 business days prior to the beginning of the next regular term. The Dismissal Review Committee must return a decision by the last business day prior to the beginning of the next regular term. Appeals will be processed only if it is mathematically possible in the judgment of the faculty review committee to reach good-standing at the end of one additional semester. Late registration fees will be assessed according to the regular registration calendar.
