Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) is one of the public service divisions of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering within the College of Science. NBMG was established by an act of the state legislature in 1929. NBMG serves as the state geological survey of Nevada.

The principal purposes of the NBMG are to carry our research and provide geoscience data on the state’s geology, mineral and energy resources, and natural hazards to individuals, industries and public agencies. NBMG hosts several externally funded research programs related to mineral and geothermal resources, geologic hazards, and geodesy. NBMG scientists, who are faculty at UNR, prepare publications, maps, and digital data that are made available to the public. They also teach classes and supervise graduate student research.
