Admission Information for New Freshmen


Admission to Bachelor’s Degree Programs

The minimum academic requirements for admission to the University are described below. Admission to the University does not mean admission to the program of your choice. Specific programs may have additional admission requirements.

Graduation from an accredited or University-approved high school and have less than 24 transferable semester college credits.

An applicant must have at least a 3.0 (weighted) grade point average (GPA) in the required high school courses listed below. A weighted GPA takes into account the extra difficulty of honors, Advanced Placement (AP)  or International Baccalaureate (IB)   classes.

If an applicant does not meet the Academic GPA requirement, they may submit the following test scores in addition to the courses listed below: 

  • SAT Critical Reading and Math combined score of 1040 (1600 scale) on tests administered prior to March 2016;
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math combined score of 1120 (1600 scale) on SAT tests administered in March 2016 or later;
  • ACT Composite of 22.

If an applicant completes the courses listed below and graduates from a Nevada high school with an Advanced Diploma, he/she will be guaranteed admission to the University.

An applicant must complete the following high school courses:

English - 4 years

Emphasis on composition; rhetoric; American, British, and World Literature.

Mathematics - 3 years

Algebra or higher level mathematics, including first and second year algebra, geometry, trigonometry or other advanced mathematics.

Natural Science - 3 years

Biology, chemistry, and physics. Two years in a laboratory science required.

Social Science - 3 years

Includes world history, geography, U.S. history, etc.

Filing Deadline

Fall semester: April 7th

Spring semester: December 15th

Placement Tests:

Freshmen are highly recommended to submit either an ACT or SAT score. Scores are used for evaluation, academic advisement, proper course placement, alternative admission criteria and scholarship opportunities. Special testing arrangements may be made for applicants with disabilities. Please contact ACT or CollegeBoard for further information.

The English and mathematics placement tests are special examinations required prior to registration. Guidelines for mathematics  and English  placement may be found in the Core Curriculum chapter of this catalog.

Test scores used for placement must be taken within the 2 years prior to matriculation.
