MICR 670 - Microbial Pathogenesis

(3 units)
Molecular and cellular mechanism of microbial promotion of disease, along with host defense systems, and the indispensable and beneficial roles of microbes in human health.

Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the diverse molecular mechanisms used by pathogens to invade mammalian hosts.
2. Students will be able to describe the range of toxins produced by pathogenic bacteria and the molecular mechanisms they use to deliver these toxins to mammalian hosts.
3. Students will be able to describe the molecular mechanisms pathogenic microbes use to evade the mammalian host immune response.
4. Students will be able to do independent literature research on a current topic in microbial pathogenesis and critically evaluate that literature.
5. Students will be able to develop transferable skills that are important for the students’ future, in particular written communication.
