Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to identify the wide range of musical styles and subgenres that make up the jazz soundscape.
2. Students will be able to discuss the complex interaction of music cultures in jazz, and the role this interaction has played in reshaping notions of individual, ethnic, and national identity.
3. Students will be able to articulate how and why jazz’s location on a “cultural hierarchy” has changed in North America over the past century.
4. Students will be able to explain how historical events, new technologies, and shifting cultural values influence – and are influenced by – new jazz styles.
