MUS 355 - Jazz Arranging I (3 units) Analysis of the jazz harmonic idiom as applied to small group and big band jazz. (Formerly MUS 337; implemented Fall 2004.)
Prerequisite(s): MUS 254 or MUS 256 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of instruments used in a jazz setting, including instrument range, transposition, timbre, technical strengths and limitations. 2. Students will be able to utilize proper notation and scoring techniques for arranging in small jazz group setting. 3. Students will be able to discuss and express their creative ideas in developing small ensemble jazz arrangements. 4. Students will be able to arrange scores in 4 and 5 parts in preparation for big band section writing.
