MUS 369 - Elementary Music Practicum (2 units) Discussion of music development, assessment, management, and school culture in the elementary school setting. Includes field experience in a local high school.
Units of Lecture: 2 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to take part in successful teaching experiences with elementary school students under the mentorship of experienced teachers. 2. Students will be able to identify best practices of various components of teaching, e.g. curricular choices, sequencing, and assessment, utilized by elementary music teachers. 3. Students will be able to discuss how students of different abilities can be accommodated in the music classroom. 4. Students will be able to identify classroom management strategies and describe the impact that management (or lack thereof) has on a music classroom. 5. Students will be able to reflect upon and compare curricular choices of elementary music teachers. 6. Students will be able to observe and apply routines, procedures, and schedules that make elementary music programs work successfully. 7. Students will be able to discuss the impact of National, State, and District Standards as well as the Common Core on music programs. 8. Students will be able to articulate how students and student learning impact teacher choices in the music classroom through written assignments and verbal discussions.
