SPA 362 - Introduction to Audiology

(3 units)
Physics of sound, anatomy and physiology of the ear, medical and surgical aspects of hearing loss, basic audiometric techniques, and hearing conservation.

Prerequisite(s): SPA 301.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and application of physics and nature of sound.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the basic structure and use of audiological instrumentation according to manufacturer’s specifications.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge to determine whether instrumentation is in calibration according to current accepted scientific standards.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of conducting behavioral testing using current technology to assiss pure tone thresholds via air/bone conduction for adults.
5. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the scientific principles behind masking and its relevance/application to audiological assessment.
6. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge to interpret and summarize the pure tone audiological findings, evaluate functional use of hearing, and the effects of hearing loss on an individual’s ability to communicate.
