SPA 467 - Communications and Language Disorders in Children

Nature of communication/language disorders in children with special needs. Methods of language and assessment intervention with children. 

Prerequisite(s): SPA 320R; SPA 340; SPA 364R; SPA 400. Corequisite(s): ENG 411B or ENG 412A.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the etiology and specific characteristics of language and communicative impairments in children.
2. Students will be able to define and describe linguistic and communicative characteristics of a variety of childhood language disorders including, but not limited to specific language impairment, mental retardation, hearing impairment, autism.
3. Students will be able to identify language and communicative impairments as primary or secondary to a disorder.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for language disorders in children.
5. Students will be able to perform language analysis of both a child with normal language and a language disorder.
6. Students will be able to demonstrate a cursory understanding of diagnostic and intervention techniques applied to children with language disorders.
