SW 101 - Intro Social Work (3 units)
Acquaints students with the values of and fields of practice within the social work profession. Emphasis on human diversity and generalist practice.
Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to identify and describe the various fields of practice within the social work profession.
2. Students will be able to distinguish between micro, mezzo, and macro practice.
3. Students will be able to identify and articulate the ethical principles expounded by NASW and the IFSW.
4. Students will be able to identify core personal values and how these values influence decisions, judgment and behaviors.
5. Students will be able to conduct searches for scholarly articles using electronic databases.
6. Students will be able to critically examine multiple dimensions of a social issue.
7. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to write using correct grammar, spelling and sentence structure.
8. Students will be able to define cultural humility, identify and articulate elements of one’s own culture.
9. Students will be able to define and distinguish between power, privilege, discrimination, and oppression.
10. Students will be able to identify and distinguish between various fields of practice within the social work profession.
11. Students will be able to define generalist practice, and accurately describe the roles and functions that constitute social work practice.
