HIST 289 - Introduction to the History of the Middle East

History of the Middle East from antiquity through the present with special emphasis on its political and cultural systems and the emergence of Islam.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to analyze and interpret primary sources from the Middle East through discussions, written assignments, and oral presentations.
2. Students will be able to analyze and understand the factors that led to the development of Islam in the Middle East and the history of the region through the present day.
3. Students will be able to explain the expansion and division of the Islamic world and the cultural valences for diverse societies in different parts of the Middle East.
4. Students will be able to explain early modern and contemporary political relations in the Middle East, and how society, culture, and politics have changed over time, through discussions and exams.
