NURS 721 - Assessment and Diagnosis within PMH Settings

Psychiatric clinical practicum emphasizing diagnostic evaluations, formulations, and initial treatment planning.

Prerequisite(s): NURS 701. Corequisite(s): NURS 726.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to identify the clinical role of the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse in the diagnostic and treatment planning process.
2. Students will be able to construct a psychiatric formulation including family, financial, vocational, community and safety issues.
3. Students will be able to utilize respective criteria from DSM V to guide the interview and develop differential diagnostic processes.
4. Students will be able to develop proficiency in conducting the MSE and evaluating the meaning of positive findings.
5. Students will be able to describe medical problems contributing to symptomatology and in need of health promotion, or lifestyle change.
6. Students will be able to identify and implement therapeutic interventions such as individual, group, or family therapy and evaluate their outcomes.
7. Students will be able to evaluate medication regimens for side effects, benefits, need for life changes, cost, laboratory monitoring, and client self-management skills.
