PAS 710 - Behavioral Medicine Clerkship (5 units) The behavioral medicine experience offers second-year PA students active and observational involvement in either outpatient psychiatric clinical settings or inpatient psychiatric treatment facilities.
Units of Internship/Practicum: 5 Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to understand diagnostic criteria and course of psychiatric disorders across all ages and discuss fundamental aspects of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments of psychiatric disorders including psychotherapeutic interventions, behavioral interventions, psychosocial rehabilitation, psychoeducational approaches recovery models, and self-help. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate professional interaction with patients and other healthcare professionals and understand the multidisciplinary team approach and the roles of the various disciplines involved in mental health services. 3. Students will be able to conduct a comprehensive psychiatric history and examination. 4. Students will be able to articulate the clinical presentation, course, etiological theories, and treatments for major psychiatric disorders with emphasis on mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, dementia, delirium, substance-related disorders, and sexual disorders. 5. Students will be able to assess psychiatric emergencies, especially dangerousness to self and others.
