PAS 730 - General Surgery Clerkship (5 units) Second-year PA students will advance their knowledge of surgical disease and enhance their ability to comprehensively recognize and manage surgical problems encountered in the surgical patient.
Units of Internship/Practicum: 5 Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to work with the surgical team including all types of healthcare providers in the supervised care of assigned surgical patients. 2. Students will be able to conduct preoperative and postoperative evaluation of patients. 3. Students will be able to recognize and diagnose surgical emergencies, formulate a comprehensive, prioritized differential diagnosis and then determine whether the patient is a good surgical candidate, based on his or her co-existing medical/surgical problems. 4. Students will be able to present a surgical and critical care patient on rounds. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to write admission orders, daily progress or “soap” notes, preoperative notes, post-operative notes, and critical care notes. 6. Students will be able to describe common post-operative surgical complications, including wound complications.
