ART 308 - Museum Studies (3 units) History and philosophy of museums; their role in contemporary society; museum organization, management, program planning, funding, publications, guest speakers, supervised field trips to museums.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to develop an awareness and understanding of various kinds and types of “Museums” from [in the words of one wag] “carnival to mausoleum” via lecture, computer presentations and individual exploration and research. 2. Students will be able to recognize the difference[s] between “museum” and “gallery.” 3. Students will be able to explore, research, and develop an area of interest’s [Art, History, Natural History, Science, “Unorthodox museum[s]”) salient contributions to the concept of “Museum.” 4. Students will be able to produce a “white paper” covering the perceived “value” of the particular type museum he or she may be investigating. 5. Students will be able to participate in an extensive field trip to visit a number of different museums and galleries outside of the Reno area [Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, etc.].
