CHS 310 - Health and Wellness Communication (3 units) Analysis and methods of communication. Strategies for dealing with specific behavioral and psychosocial issues in the professional setting. (Formerly HE 310; implementation Fall 2009)
Prerequisite(s): CHS 101; ENG 102; and Junior or Senior standing. Recommended Preparation: CHS 211.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to describe how personal characteristics, such as, perceptions, expectations, stereotypes, feelings, roles, beliefs, attitudes, cultural and personal values, and verbal and nonverbal behavior influence quality communication. 2. Students will be able to explain the role of communication in the effective functioning of the health care system in a variety of contexts. 3. Students will be able to describe strategies for communicating with people with a variety of communication needs including older adults, people with disabilities, people with low literacy, people with limited English proficiency, people with different cultural or religious backgrounds, and others. 4. Students will be able to evaluate patient-provider interactions according to theories and strategies covered in class. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and develop a theory-based health communication campaign that is responsive to the needs and characteristics of the target population and is likely to be effective in promoting healthy behavior. 6. Students will be able to evaluate health promotion/media campaigns according to content covered in class.
