The history and role of intercollegiate athletics in contemporary American higher education, including Title IX, funding, student athlete academic performance, stereotypes, race, and commercialization.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to discuss the historical and philosophical basis and role of intercollegiate athletics within higher education.
2. Students will be able to describe external regulations and the impact of external constituencies upon the administration of intercollegiate athletics.
3. Students will be able to analyze the administrative structure and financing of intercollegiate athletics and the university as a whole.
4. Students will be able to discuss the importance of the psychological, social, and academic development of student athletes.
