ENG 261 - Introduction to Poetry

(2 to 3 units)
Reading and discussion of selected British and American poems with attention to form and content.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 102  or ENG 114 .

Core Status: Core Fine Arts
Offered: Every Fall - Even Years
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to use critical and practical concepts to analyze a range of poems and kinds of poetic form.
2. Students will be able to compose well-supported and coherent interpretative analyses of individual poems.
3. Students will be able to articulate the relationship between poems and their historical, artistic, and literary contexts.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of poetic technique through expressive recitations of poems and a critical review of a poetry reading.
5. Students will be able to expressively read at least one poem in a public setting, demonstrating an understanding of poetic form, rhythm, theme, and shape.
