Nature and function of language, including an introduction to the linguistics subsystems of modern English and the development of the English language.

Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to distinguish between scientific and non-scientific claims about language.
2. Students will be able to analyze language on the phonetic, morphological and syntactic levels.
3. Students will be able to identify and explain the various factors that produce language change and language variation.?
