ENG 340 - Myth and Archetype

Modes of relationship between mythic patterns and literary expression. 

Prerequisite(s): CH 201 ; CH 202  or CH 203 ; Junior or Senior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to articulate the premises and assumptions of different theoretical approaches to the study of myths as the “sacred narratives” of peoples.
2. Students will be able to explain and assess ideas associated with the widespread patterns of recurring motifs within myth traditions.
3. Students will be able to describe and compare the cultural significance of the trickster figure in the traditional narratives of African, Native American, European, and Asian peoples.
4. Students will be able to describe and analyze people’s expression of social values within their traditioanl tales of “cultural heroes.
5. Students will be able to explain and evaluate the etiological purposes served by traditional accounts of the creation and destruction of the world.
