ENG 435A - Milton

Intensive study of Milton’s poetry and selected prose.

Prerequisite(s): Junior standing. Corequisite(s): ENG 303 .

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to write lucid, well-constructed arguments analyzing and interpreting texts.
2. Students will be able to analyze Milton’s major works in their cultural and historical contexts, and to discuss Milton’s place in the political and intellectual history of England.
3. Students will be able to identify the distinctive features of Milton’s poetry and to discuss Milton’s influence on later English poetry.
4. Students will be able to discuss Milton’s use of Biblical sources, and his use of figures, motifs, and generic conventions from classical literature, in his own lyrics, epics, and dramas.
5. Students will be able to discuss the major critical takes on Milton’s Paradise Lost.
