HIST 374 - History of the Byzantine Empire

Survey of the history, religion, art and culture of Byzantine civilization from 610 AD to 1453 AD.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to analyze and interpret primary source documents in words and images that pertain to the social, political and/or cultural life of the Byzantine Empire.
2. Students will be able to analyze and interpret secondary sources and comprehend arguments that pertain to the historiography of the Byzantine Empire.
3. Students will be able to analyze and clearly explain the argument, main points, and use of evidence in secondary sources, through class discussion and written assignments.
4. Students will be able to describe the development of the Byzantine Empire and its political systems and formulate an overview of popular culture, religion, literature, and economy in essays and exams.
