HIST 384 - The Italian Renaissance

(3 units)
The rise of Italian communes and the formation of city-states, 1300-1500, with special emphasis on political, social and economic developments and cultural achievements.

Units of Lecture: 3
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing and/or in classroom participation, an understanding of modern Italy in the context of theories of nationalism and identity.
2. Students will be able to articulate clearly, in writing and/or in classroom participation and other assignments, an understanding of modern Italian culture in its historical context.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the various conflicts and contradictions in Italian historical development resulting from the rise of the Italian state in the nineteenth century.
4. Students will be able to articulate clearly, in writing, the historical importance of a figure in modern Italian history who exemplifies or is otherwise connected to Italian nationalist aspiration.
