HIST 417C - The West as National Experience (3 units) CO13 Historical issues shaping national myth, vision and destiny growing out of the experience, opportunities and conflicts of American expansion to the Pacific.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 ; CH 201 or CH 202 or CH 203 or CH 212 ; Junior or Senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 Core Status: General Capstone, CO13 Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to explain the ethical principles, belief systems, and social contexts that have shaped the modern American culture (also known as the “American identity”) as it was expressed in Western Films 1905 to today and identify how different groups were represented and came to be included or excluded from this “American Identity.” 2. Students will be able to analyze and synthesize primary, secondary, and cultural sources. 3. Students will be able to find and use historical scholarship and sources to answer a research question. 4. Students will be able to present ideas in a clear and persuasive manner both orally and in writing. 5. Students will be able to use relevant scholarship and historical evidence to articulate a theory of how and why American identity was shaped and reinforced by the social forces and cultural values exposed in American western films.
