HIST 494A - Medicine and Technology in Traditional China (3 units) CO11 Introduces the thinking behind the medicine and technology of classical and imperial China; focusing on technology and material culture; medicine and the body.
Units of Lecture: 3 Core Status: CO11 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to identify key historical forces that led to the rise of a distinct therapeutic tradition in China, one that is being widely emulated around the world, as medicine in China is globalized. 2. Students will be able to analyze and synthesize primary, secondary, and cultural sources. 3. Students will be able to find and use historical scholarship and sources to answer a research question. 4. Students will be able to present ideas in a clear and persuasive manner both orally and in writing, in accordance with the ethical principles governing scholarly inquiry. 5. Students will be able to analyze how medicine in China is influencing the practice of biomedicine and causing shifts in how patients describe and experience physical distress.
