CHS 476 - AIDS: Psychosocial and Health Care Concerns (3 units) CO10, CO13 An understanding of the HIV/AIDS pandemic from an ecological approach. The individual, interpersonal, organizational, and social/political factors that have shaped this pandemic will be explored.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 ; CH 201 or CH 202 or CH 203 or CH 212 ; Junior or Senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to articulate basic principles of HIV virology, immunology, transmission, disease progression, and treatment. 2. Students will be able to articulate an awareness of some of the central historical and present diversity issues that influence the HIV epidemic, including race, ethnicity, gender, social class, religion, sexual identity, and national origin. 3. Students will be able to analyze and interpret information about cultural differences, cultural rules, and cultural biases in their own society or about non-dominant or marginalized groups. 4. Students will be able to identify the complex elements important to members of a diverse cultural group or groups in relation to its/their history, values, politics, economy, or beliefs and practices. 5. Students will be able to identify and summarize current scholarly research related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic affecting a chosen population. 6. Students will be able to make connections between and apply theories from previous coursework and/or other disciplines to understand how different populations worldwide are impacted the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
