CHS 627 - Toxic Communities and Public Health (3 units) Examination of how communities are affected by environmental toxins and how contaminated communities organize and respond to health effects of such environmental processes.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Odd Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to discuss the origins and distribution of occupational and environmental contaminants. 2. Students will be able to identify and understand key concepts of exposure, dose, and biological effect. 3. Students will be able to describe and categorize major sources of anthropogenic and natural exposure to environmental pollution. 4. Students will be able to enumerate factors that govern differences in environmental heath regulatory structures among governments. 5. Students will be able to evaluate ‘stimuli’ for environmental health policy formation, explaining how episodes of environmental contamination contribute to refinement of regulations. 6. Students will be able to represent and defend opposing positions held by stakeholders in the sphere of environmental health public policy formation. 7. Students will be able to produce an upper-division research paper predicated on scholarly sources which address episodes of environmental contamination and issues relating to environmental health policy. 8. Students will be able to provide verbal and written constructive feedback on a peer’s research or position paper.
