CHS 673 - Epidemiology (3 units) Principles used in measuring health outcomes with a focus on measures of frequency, associations, and epidemiological study designs.
Units of Lecture: 2 Units of Discussion/Recitation: 1 Offered: Every Fall and Spring Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to describe the historical roots of epidemiological thinking and their contribution to the evolution of the scientific method. 2. Students will be able to use basic epidemiological measures for describing morbidity and mortality to express numerically the amount and distribution of health- and non health-related outcomes. 3. Students will be able to use the distribution of a health-related outcome to generate hypotheses that might provide an explanation. 4. Students will be able to explain basic statistical and epidemiological concepts of estimation, inference, and adjustment to establish association. 5. Students will be able to explain how to use evidence of an association to make a judgment about whether an association is causal. 6. Students will be able to describe the basic epidemiological study designs that are used to test hypotheses, identify associations, and establish causation. 7. Students will be able to critically examine and evaluate the strength and limitations of a public health topic (scientific literature, mass media, intervention, or policy) and demonstrate quantitative regard for various sources of error.
