CHS 701 - Social and Behavioral Dimensions of Health

Concepts and methods of social and behavioral sciences relevant to the identification and solution of public health problems.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to identify basic theories, concepts and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice.
2. Students will be able to identify causes of social and behavioral factors that affect health of individuals and populations from an ecological perspective.
3. Students will be able to identify the individual, organizational and community concerns, assets, resources and deficits for social and behavioral science interventions.
4. Students will be able to describe the role of social and community factors in both the onset and solution of public health problems.
5. Students will be able to describe the merits of social and behavioral science interventions & policies.
6. Students will be able to specify multiple targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs and/or policies.
7. Students will be able to describe how societal, organizational, and individual factors influence and are influenced by public health communications.
8. Students will be able to demonstrate effective written and oral skills for communicating with different audiences in the context of professional and public health activities.
9. Students will be able to describe the roles of, history, power, privilege and structural inequality in producing health disparities.
10. Students will be able to explain why cultural competence alone cannot address health disparity.
11. Students will be able to apply social justice and human rights principles when addressing community needs.
12. Students will be able to analyze determinants of health and disease using an ecological framework.
