CHS 753 - Health Informatics

Introduction to the use of information and information technology in public health and health services.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to justify descriptive techniques commonly used to summarize public health data.
2. Students will be able to verify basic informatics techniques with vital statistics and public health records in the description of public health characteristics and in public health research and evaluation.
3. Students will be able to develop written and oral presentations based on statistical analyses for both public health professionals and educated lay audiences.
4. Students will be able to apply data analysis using a statistical software package (SAS).
5. Students will be able to evaluate key sources of data for epidemiologic purposes.
6. Students will be able to distinguish a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time, and place.
7. Students will be able to compare basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use and dissemination of epidemiologic data.
8. Students will be able to apply basic epidemiology measures.
9. Students will be able to describe how the public health information infrastructure is used to collect, process, maintain, and disseminate data.
10. Students will be able to explain the influences of social, organizational and individual factors on the use of information technology end users.
11. Students will be able to evaluate legal and ethical principles to the use of information technology and resources in public health settings.
12. Students will be able to explain collaboration with communication and informatics specialists in the process of design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs.
13. Students will able to analyze information technology to access, evaluate, and interpret public health data.
14. Students will be able to investigate informatics methods and resources as strategic tools to promote public health.
15. Students will be able to describe how informatics and communication methods can be used to advocate for community public health programs and policies.
