CHS 780 - Biostatistics in Public Health

Introduction to the underlying principles of biostatistics and a variety of statistical applications in public health research.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to describe the roles biostatistics serves in the discipline of public health.
2. Students will be able to apply basic concepts of probability, random variation and commonly used statistical probability distributions.
3. Students will be able to illustrate preferred methodological alternatives to commonly used statistical methods when assumptions are not met.
4. Students will be able to calculate descriptive techniques commonly used to summarize public health data.
5. Students will be able to apply common statistical methods for inference.
6. Students will be able to calculate basic epidemiology measures.
7. Students will be able to apply causal inference and hypothesis testing.
8. Students will be able to calculate random error and systematic error (bias).
9. Students will be able to describe whether confounding and/or effect modification is present.
