COM 607 - Gender and Communication

(3 units)
Exploration of gendered verbal and nonverbal communication in various social interaction settings. Includes friendships, families, classrooms, organizations, and the media.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to define historical and contemporary developments in gender theory.
2. Students will be able to evaluate the concept of gender as it relates and interacts with related concepts including sex and sexuality.
3. Students will be able to identify gendered communication practices.
4. Students will be able to invent and explore alternatives to produce, consume, and enact gender beyond the usual gender binary.
5. Students will be able to critically analyze the relationship between, and the inequities present within, gender and major social institutions such as language, family, education, intimacy, work, and media.
6. Students will be able to apply individual gendered biographies and trajectories to world contexts.
