EDU 207 - Exploration of Children’s Literature

(3 units)
Survey of children’s literature genres. Censorship, historical background, children’s interests, literature programs and book evaluations.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 .

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate the importance of the role of literature in developing language and literacy of all children.
2. Students will be able to select literature for children in elementary school in accordance with their developmental levels and changing interests.
3. Students will be able to develop criteria for evaluating the various kinds, or genres, of children’s literature.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate awareness of theories of response to literature.
5. Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with outstanding authors and illustrators of children’s literature.
6. Students will be able to assess current issues in book selection and teaching.
7. Students will be able to assess a variety of techniques for broadening and deepening children’s response to literature in elementary schools.
