Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to develop perspectives on the enduring questions about higher education in the United States and how they apply today in a contested environment.
2. Students will be able to identify and explain the landscape of higher education in the United States in terms of varying characteristics; e.g., control (private, public); instructional level (4-year, 2-year); Carnegie Basic; orientation (secular, religious/independent; and business model (non-profit, for-profit).
3. Students will be able to discuss the implications of the variety of higher education institutions in the United States in terms of their mission, programs, institutional control, student characteristics; academic life of faculty; external and internal governance, career opportunities and so forth.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the historical development and expansion of higher education in the United States.
5. Students will be able to identify and discuss foundational concepts common to academic life in universities and develop some perspective as to their viability today.
6. Students will be able to identify and analyze the role of the federal and state government in the expansion, support, and control of higher education in the United States.
7. Students will be able to identify organization structures and key leadership and administrative roles common to higher education institutions in the United States.
