EL 741 - Politics, Policy and Ethics (3 units) Emphasis on national, state and local political structures and processes including the origin and appraisal of school policies. Key constituencies to be discussed.
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the context of local, state and federal education policy. 2. Students will be able to analyze the roles of various agencies, institutions, political bodies, media, and special interests in the formation of public policy. 3. Students will be able to research key points of view and arguments for and against various education policy strategies. 4. Students will be able to use the Nevada legislature as a case study to understand the political arena in which education functions. Review specific k-12 and higher education bills introduced during the session. Conduct a cost analysis of each bill and develop a list of potential unintended consequences. 5. Students will be able to conduct a written policy analysis of a specific policy at the federal, state or institutional level. Students will be able to conduct a pro and con debate of the policy with colleagues.
