MICR 276 - Introduction to Microbiology (3 units) Survey of the biology of microorganisms. Topics include microbial structure, physiology, genetics, and evolution; virology; and environmental microbiology.
Prerequisite(s): CHEM 121A and CHEM 121L or CHEM 201 . Corequisite(s): BIOL 191 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate general knowledge of the various types of microorganisms known to exist and learn their general characteristics including cell morphology and physiology, taxonomy and environmental importance. 2. Students will be able to be able to explain relationships and apply appropriate terminology relating to the structure, metabolism, genetics and ecology of microorganisms and viruses. 3. Students will be able to explain principle of information flow within a cell, regulation of cellular activities and metabolic processes. 4. Students will be able to explain principles of physical and chemical methods used in culturing and controlling growth of microorganisms. 5. Students will be able to explain the mechanisms of inheritance of genetic information in microorganisms: the causes, consequences and uses of mutation; exchange and acquisition of genetic information. 6. Students will be able to explain the interactions and impact of microorganisms in the environment including the principles of adaptation and natural selection; symbiosis; microbial recycling of resources: microbes transforming the environment.
