ART 448 - Basque Art, Politics, and Identity in a Global Context

(3 units) CO13
Situates Basque art in indigenous culture and relates it to major Western and non-Western artistic movements and explores identity politics through art. (ART 448 and BASQ 448 are cross-listed; credit may be earned in one of the two.)

Prerequisite(s): ENG 102; CH 201  or CH 202  or CH 203  or CH 212 ; Junior or Senior standing.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to analyze complex artistic, socio-political and cultural issues relating to the different ways in which Basque art and artists can be understood.
2. Students will be able to use advanced search strategies in library research databases and tools to find primary and secondary sources for the written assignments.
3. Students will be able to integrate and synthesize results from course-related reading/lectures/discussions in the written assignments, group presentations, and exams.
4. Students will be able to reflect critically on their learning and life experiences in comparative, global context and comprehend different viewpoints on the relationships between art, contemporary politics, and identity formation in the Basque Country and elsewhere in the world.
5. Students will be able to articulate relationships between works of art and their historical contexts in Basque politics, culture, and society.
