COM 422 - Difference and Communication (3 units) CO10, CO12 Survey of the impact of social identity difference including gender, race, sexuality, religion, socio-economic status, age, nationality, and ability on communication.
Prerequisite(s): COM 113 ; COM 212 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to identify how human difference impacts, enriches, and complicates life in interpersonal, organizational, familial, group, and other settings. 2. Students will be able to explain how communication functions differently across social categories. 3. Students will be able to analyze how power and control of social identity categories are constructed. 4. Students will be able to compare the role of historical, political, and religious factors in creating social identity category stereotypes and perceptions.
