CAS 257 - Fundamentals of Behavioral Health

An overview of wellness dimensions, peer support specialists’ ethics, patient advocacy, and systems of care navigation for the mental health and substance abuse services provider.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to discuss the major behavioral health conditions identified in the DSM 5.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the differences between wellness theories/practices and how each affects mental health and substance abuse conditions.
3. Students will be able to idetify historical facts, change theory tenets, and the varying role of both professional and peer behavioral health care providers.
4. Students will be able to recognize and comprehend the ethical codes and scope of practice issues important to peer support and professoinal specialists applying an ehtical decision-making model.
5. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge regarding new strategies for intervening with and providing support for individuals with behavioral health issues.
6. Students will be able to construct a presentation on complementary and alternative medicine strategies to demonstrate knowledge regarding new strategies for intervening with and providing support for
